I Am CDC – Shirley Ding

Watch on YouTube here: I Am CDC – Shirley Ding
Via New videos I’m the third generation in my family as a scientist. My grandparents, they are biology professors and my parents are chemistry professors. After graduating from Georgia Tech with a PHD degree in chemistry and biochemistry, I started my post-doctoral work in CDC’s infectious disease program. For the past 13 years I’ve worked at the tobacco lab, division of laboratory sciences, in CDC’s National Center for Environmental Health. I love it because the CDC tobacco lab is very unique in providing laboratory measures to help us better understand a person’s exposure to tobacco products and cigarette smoke. As we continue to learn more, we can share this knowledge to others which can lead to improving public health. The CDC tobacco lab, which I am very proud of, it provides the first objective assessment of active and passive smoking exposures of the US population. The lab found 88% of non-smokers were exposed to second-hand smoke, a much greater percentage than previously thought. In addition, home and workplace environments made major contributions to environmental tobacco smoke exposure. So the results from the study were important in justifying actions across the nation to reduce smoking in public places and the workplace and our study is definitely protecting public health. My name is Shirley Ding and I am CDC.Comments on this video are allowed in accordance with our comment policy:http://ift.tt/GFAfIF This video can also be viewed athttps://www.cdc.gov/about/videos/IamCDC/IamCdcDignExt/IamCdcDignExt.mp4
